This is an automaton made in the 16th century to resemble a Franciscan friar. It is made out of wood and iron, with a clockwork mechanism inside that makes it move.
When it is wound up, the automaton walks in a set pattern, striking its chest and lifting a wooden cross. While pacing, it nods its head and moves its jaw, as if saying a prayer.
This machine raises many questions. Can machines be religious? Are our choices predetermined? What kind of universe do we live in?
